May 2009

The Society's upcoming activities contain something for everyone! At our next General Meeting on Thursday, May 21, our guest speaker will be Quantah Rose Samuels. Mrs. Samuels' presentation, "Native American, Growing up on Long Island," should provide a very interesting evening. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, June 10, the Society members will tour Teddy Roosevelt's summer home in Sayville called Meadowcroft. We will also tour the Laughlin Vineyards adjacent to Meadowcroft. Please leave your name and telephone number on the Society's answering machine, 924.3401, if you are interested in going on this tour.

On Saturday, June 13, Yaphank's resident psychic, Balee, will conduct individual readings at the Hawkins House. The cost is $30.00 for members, $35.00 for non-members. Please send your checks, made payable to the Yaphank Historical Society, P.O. Box 111, Yaphank, NY 11980 prior to the event. Readings will be 15 minutes in length. Please call 924-3041 or 924-2342 for reservations as appointments are limited.

On Thursday, June 18, our General Meeting will have a presentation by Mr. Alexander Katlan, a highly credentialed, well renowned art conservator in New York City. Mr. Katlan will discuss painting restoration and art conservation projects of Long Island artists. Mr. Katlan restored the Eliza and Samuel Norton portraits hanging in the South Parlor.

Our Community Yard Sale will be Saturday, July 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Hawkins House. Vendors will not be charged; contact Ralf Petersen, 924-4872, for details. The Society is launching an annual "rummage sale." In the future this would be held on a July weekend and offer "better" quality items of small furniture, lamps, china, paintings, figurines and the like. Items would be donated to the Society for sale to continue the preservation work of the Society. Items should be donated through Sue Maresco, the Society Curator. Please contact her at 289-8171. Items will be accepted throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing you at one or all of the events.... - Helen Kalbach, President
